CCUA Owned and Operated Environmental Laboratory
— Our `Why'
irm ,
III
• Hundreds of monthly samples
1 ' Illik
• 150+ monthly drinking water bacteriological samples
• Easy test = fairly low cost '
ll
• Drive time to contract lab = fairly high cost
• Length of boil water notices = customer dissatisfaction fli" 1
- . 77 l• CCUA owned and operated environmental laboratory a.*,, T
• Eliminates the need to drive to and from southside Jax i -
• No longer limited to contract lab hours of operation ii '71 ja
CCUA Owned and Operated Environmental Laboratory
— What's Next?
• Wastewater Process Control
• Contract lab takes 2 weeks to provide results
• Time to adjust plant is gone
• Sanitary Sewer Overflows . 444,
• Surface water sampling for fecal coliform
• Will know within 18 hours if additional sampling is
needed
• Public notice signage 1

Bacteriological Testing in Drinking Water
• Required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Florida Department of
Environmental Protection
• Monthly sampling determined by population in distribution system
• Quarterly sampling of wells
• Boil water notice clearances
Total Coliform
Ilk • Presence indicates a
potential contamination by
' other, more harmful bacteria
Contaminants
Escherichia coli
• Prescence indicated
potential fecal contamination
IDEXX Colilert- 18 Substrate
• Simultaneously detects both total coliforms and E. coil
• Detects a single viable coliform or E. coli per sample
• Results in 18 hours
How it works
Coliform
E. coli
Coliforms use an enzyme to E. coli uses an enzyme to metabolize
metabolize ONPG which causes a MUG and create fluorescence
change from colorless to yellow.
